What is B Corp Certification?

The B Corp, or Benefit Corporation, label was created in the United States in 2006 by B Lab, an international NGO that aims to transform the global economy for the benefit of people and the planet.

It is a demanding international certification that evaluates the impact of companies on society and the environment. Today, it is the most difficult label to obtain in terms of criteria.

The 5 Pillars of the B Corp Assessment

- The environment: impact on the planet and biodiversity, resource management.

- Employees: the company's contribution to employee well-being, inclusiveness and equality.

-Governance: internal policy, business model, transparency, mission or commitment of the company.

-Customers: ethical marketing, quality of products and services, data confidentiality and consideration of customer satisfaction.

-The community: the company's contribution to the social and economic well-being of its community and the local population.

How do I get B Corp certification?

Any for-profit organization can conduct its self-assessment free of charge using the online BIA (B Impact Assessment) tool. The company must answer a very detailed questionnaire (more than 300 questions) and provide supporting documents in a dedicated platform, the BIA (B Impact Assessment). If the minimum score obtained is 80 points, an audit starts to complete the questionnaire.

Like us, you will probably be very eager to obtain the label, but be aware that the delays can be very long depending on the size of your company or your industry.

Becoming a B Corp implies modifying the company's statutes and inscribing the search for a societal and environmental impact and the balance between profit and value creation for stakeholders. Obtaining the certification represents a cost for the company. It is necessary to pay an amount defined according to its turnover.

Transparency is an intrinsic part of B Corp: your performance review will be available online for all to see. An audit will then be conducted every three years to measure the impact and progress of each company.

Among our strengths:

Our transparency, our corporate mission and our historical commitment to all humans and the planet. From day one, we have chosen to work with certified ecological products and audited fair trade workshops.

Among our areas of improvement:

We want to go even further in monitoring our environmental criteria. We have already set up a carbon footprint monitoring system and we are reducing our impact in terms of energy and transport by relocating part of our production. We also want to continue to increase the proportion of our products made from recycled materials.

We also want to formalize and document our processes and HR policy.

In conclusion, B Corp is an introspection of the whole company and its partners. Certification is not an end in itself, but rather a challenge and a commitment to continuous improvement. Today, B Corp is a large community of committed companies that care about their impact on all people and the planet. By joining the movement, companies are showing that they don't want to be the best in the world, but the best FOR the world.
